What do you know about Marie Antoinette? France's most haed Queen? A squanderer of the country's money who ruthlessly and infamously said "Let them eat cake" when there was no bread in the kingdom? These images of the Queen are rather different when she is played by Kirsten Dunst.
Sofia Coppola paints the portrait of a young queen, forced into a mariage with a Dauphin who is rather lazy, especially in bed where the marriage is not consummated for what appears to be months!
Marie's love for indulgence is presented in a way that is almost endearingly childlike, she enjoys parties, shopping and drinking copious amounts of champagne - yes, every girls dream!
Once her daughter is born we see a loving mother, perhaps most clearly summed up when she claims
"If I had a son, he would belong to France, but you belong to me."
Although an idiot could point out whyshe was so unpopular, the film is quite sympathetic to the young Queen, showing the ridiculousness of the world she has to live in, showing the idiocy of her husband who sends troops to America despite their being unable to afford it.
Without a background knowledge of the Queen you are inclined to feel sorry for her, she does not seem like an awful person, she is sweet and loving and beautiful. The story focuses so much on her character that we do not know much about what is happening in France itself, we only see the confines of the palace walls.
The entire story is set to 80s style pop m usic, giving it a snese of the sl;ightly surreal which is interesting but not always effective.
